Developed by Erving Goffman, the idea is that a person lives their life much like an actor performs on a stage. The events of a day become scenes that are enjoyed during a trip to a theatre. Goffman's theory of stigmatization has certainly reached across various disciplines, so it makes sense that different areas of study as well as different scholars would have chosen to calibrate the lens of stigmatization theory in various different ways.
